If you're looking for both quality and quantity in your next movie night, I have the top list for you: the top 15 movie franchises of all time. Banging out on film franchises is a much better idea than watching a bunch of one-off movies.
If you’re practicing social distancing or maybe under self-quarantine, you’re no doubt watching a lot of things. After all, there’s nothing better to take your mind off the news or uncertainty than to disappear into a great story. Franchises have been king for decades, but it’s rare to find a movie franchise with a high average of good-to-great movies. We’ve put together the best list of movie franchises that will surely make you corona free. There’s really something here for every one of you.
Mission: Impossible
Mission: Impossible is the best franchise running right now. The level of quality of these films is different from other movies which really makes them special. Each Mission: Impossible movie is distinct, with filmmakers bringing their own flavor to the spy series.
What has probably kept this series going is its charismatic lead star upping the ante with every next film in the franchise. From breaking into a secure facility by dangling on ropes to scaling the Burj Khalifa, Tom Cruise has left no stone unturned in defying his age and making these stunts and action sequences the hallmark of his MI films as super spy Ethan Hunt.
The franchise was breathed new life into with ‘Ghost Protocol’ and now seems to be headed in an overall good direction. Tom Cruise just simply never quits being the coolest of all.
X-Men
There have definitely been a few ups and downs in the fantastic world of X-Men, but the story of mutants living among us and training at Charles Xavier’s school is still beloved by many of us. X-Men is a little more mature and darker than its fellow Marvel movies as it covers real-life issues. It has awesome origin stories and spin-offs that are occasionally just as badass as their predecessors.
This movie franchise isn’t just packed with typical superhero tropes like fight scenes and villains, they also cover darker themes like racism, social justice, and governmental control. The two hilarious Deadpool movies are also included in this saga. With a whopping 12 titles, the X-Men series is a fun, action-packed adventure with a strong message of unity at its core. You must surely watch the X-Men franchise if you love fantasy movies.
DC Cinematic Universe
The DC Cinematic Universe doesn’t have a great reputation. But even it's less popular than the MCU, there’s still some fun to be had if you just want to sit back and enjoy the best action scenes and kick-ass heroes that could take on the best Marvel superheroes anytime.
The DC Universe includes many superhero flicks such as “Justice League,” “Man of Steel," “Suicide Squad,” and many more. The DC movie list goes on, and despite a few flops in between, this cinematic universe is still worth watching.
Wonder Woman, the most successful one, is considered one of the best superhero films of all time. DC Universe represents only nine of the films in the franchise, with a plethora in the works for die-hard fans.
Toy Story
The 'Toy Story' film deals with the adventures of a group of toys belonging to a seemingly normal boy, Andy. Apart from pulling the seemingly impossible task of making these toys talk, the writers helped the diverse group of toys come alive on the screen in such a way that they are no way seemed different from their human counterparts, making Woody and Buzz Lightyear instant favorites.
All the entries in the franchise were extremely well received, with the third one being hailed as the best one in the series, and one of the best-animated movies. Countless rewatches, and I have concluded that there won’t be a time when Andy going off to college and bidding farewell to his toy companions won’t break my heart into several pieces.
Harry Potter
Harry Potter is a British-American film series based on the original books by the author J. K. Rowling. It consists of 8 films beginning in 2001 with the film “Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone” and ending in 2011 with “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows"
This is one of my favorite franchises. I had fun with the movies and enjoyed the change in tone and aesthetic from film to film, but my full-on Harry Potter obsession didn’t come until after I had acquainted myself with J.K. Rowling’s masterful book series.
These films are so lovingly crafted and true to the spirit of Rowling’s books, but also take inspired swings. They’re some of the best examples of book-to-film adaptations in history. The variety of flavors you find from film to film, and the skill with which this one long story plays out in seven different parts, makes it highly watchable in a marathon setting.
Indiana Jones
Indiana Jones is an American media franchise based on the adventures of Dr. Henry Walton "Indiana" Jones Jr., a fictional professor of archaeology. It began in 1981 with the film Raiders of the Lost Ark. A prequel, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, followed in 1984, and a sequel, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was released in 1989. A fourth film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was released in 2008. A fifth film is in production and is provisionally scheduled to be released in 2022.
This series follows archaeologist and hero Indiana Jones on adventures around the world. The franchise solidified actor Harrison Ford as both a leading man and action hero as he performed many of his own stunts. The American Film Institute ranked him as the second-greatest film hero of all time. This movie franchise must be watched by hungry adventure lovers.
The Dark Knight Trilogy
Batman Begins brought us a new way of looking at superhero cinema. Christopher Nolan is a miracle worker. He redeemed a character that had nearly been destroyed by Joel Schumacher. Cinematically speaking, Batman was a joke. Batman Begins changed all of that for good. Suddenly, Batman mattered again. Not only that, but Nolan made it clear that superhero films were not just for kids. Superhero films could be real cinema.
If Batman Begins forced people to sit up and take notice, then The Dark Knight made it impossible to look away. As it stands, The Dark Knight is arguably the greatest superhero film of all time. It gave us one of the all-time great movie villains in The Joker, some terrific comic-book iconography, and a propulsive musical score and game-changing. You either die a hero or live long enough to forget how good the Dark Knight trilogy is. Make your choice wisely.
James Bond
If you’re living on this planet, you surely know who James Bond is. Of course, the British spy has been embodied by a whole lot of actors over the years, but at its core, the story never changes: a secret agent is tasked by the MI6 to help defeat evil masterminds. Whether you prefer Daniel Craig, Sean Connery, or Roger Moore, the options never end.
This epic spy franchise is based on the series of novels by Ian Fleming. From the music, the sets, and all the way to the stunts and special effects, James Bond’s movies will always impress, even if some of them do go way back into the 60s. Get your guns out and grab some popcorn – a lot of it! Because this movie series is one of the biggest of all time! The successful franchise expects to release its next film, “No Time to Die,” in October 2021.
Fast and Furious
Okay, maybe this franchise has been going for a little too long (there have been 8 movies since 2001, and it’s not stopping anytime soon), but if you love car races and over-the-top action scenes, this saga is for you. The story largely revolves around illegal street racing, but many dangerous elements invite themselves into each movie, making the ride more than worthwhile.
Fast & Furious isn’t just non-stop action, but an emotional car ride, too, as you’ll grow to love the characters throughout the years and envelop yourself in their love stories and personal dilemmas. Buckle up for super-cool cars and badass car chases. This movie series is as fast and furious as it sounds and offers some fun escapism entertainment for anyone up for a joyride.
The Godfather
There are 3 movies in this all-time best trilogy. Fans of cinema’s most famous gangster family would probably like to forget there was a trilogy. The first two films are considered to be among the greatest motion pictures ever made, and some consider the sequel superior to the original.
Sixteen years after the release of “The Godfather, Part II,” the third film in the series was released, and it paled in comparison to its predecessors. The Godfather (1972) is always the top-rated film according to audiences. The Godfather 2 is considered the top-rated film according to critics. So, just bite the bullet and do it.
Jurassic Park
The first movie in the franchise, Jurassic Park, was directed by Steven Spielberg and released in 1993. The plot concerns an entrepreneur, John Hammond, who opens a wildlife park of cloned dinosaurs. However, a breakdown of the island's security system allows the dinosaurs to escape and chaos ensues. Since then four more movies have been made - and the sixth “Jurassic World: Dominion” is due to be released in 2021.
Dinosaurs living on a remote island sounds like a nightmare in real life, right? Of course! This American sci-fi action series imagines what might happen if genetic scientists made it possible for dinosaurs to return to Earth and inhabit a theme park.
There’s something special about watching each movie that really lets you feel the power of the Jurassic Park or, more specifically, the intensity of the technology and science behind it.
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
The Lord of the Rings film franchise was directed by passionate fan Peter Jackson. The series follows the journeys of a group of small beings called Hobbits that set out to destroy a magical ring belonging to an evil Dark Lord.
Both fans of its novel series and new audiences made the trilogy a box office success, and the final film in the trilogy, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, won the Academy Award for Best Picture — the first fantasy film to win the prize. It also won ten other Oscars.
Several years later, Jackson directed a trilogy based on the prequel novel to the Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit. Though the Hobbit films were less revered by critics and fans — the three-film adaptation of The Hobbit is less faithful to the novel than the Lord of the Rings films are to those novels — they were still major box office successes.
The Pirates of the Caribbean Trilogy
The Pirates of the Caribbean is another all-time top film franchise of Hollywood which have produced fantasy swashbuckler films. People just love the iconic actor Johnny Depp’s performance as Jack Sparrow in this movie franchise. Besides that, the classy acting of other characters and movie scenes are just invincible in these movie series. That’s why this is one of the most popular Hollywood movie franchises of all time.
Okay yes, technically there are five Pirates of the Caribbean films. The first film, The Curse of the Black Pearl, is one of the best pieces of blockbuster entertainment made in the 21st century. It’s thrilling and funny and adventurous. Watched in sequence, the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films tell an epically adventurous story of thievery and love in the time of pirates.
Star Wars
Twelve films separated trilogies, an origin story, a spinoff, and an animated adventure—all revolving around the galactic struggle between a ruthless ruling class and the rebels who defy them. Within that epic framework dreamed up by George Lucas, some of the most enduring icons of the genre were created. The list goes on, and the opportunity to spend dozens of hours watching this crew struggle and triumph is a gift as vast as space.
It all started with a trio of rebels leading the fight against the evil Galactic Empire in A New Hope (1977) and it ended… with a trio of rebels leading the fight against the First Order (The Last Jedi 2019). Yes, that might sound like history repeating itself, but all the action and lovable characters in between make the Star Wars movie series a must-watch.
Such an iconic movie saga, this probably is the most famous trilogy to ever exist and I'm pretty sure everyone has watched at least one Star Wars film in their life. If you’ve yet to watch Star Wars, now’s the time, especially if you’re craving fantasy and adventure, action and sci-fi, and epic storytelling – yes this saga blends all movie genres into one magnificent galactical story.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe
If you really want to make a competition out of a movie race, there’s always the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Over the past decade, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has built an expansive set of films while raising the critical and commercial expectations for ongoing movie series.
With the culmination of 10 years all brought into one of the best movie franchise events of our lifetime, and in all of history, going back to the start with Ironman or any assortment of Marvel movies since then is sure to be a great time. There are at least 20 Marvel titles you’ll need to watch excluding movies that stand outside of the franchised Marvel Cinematic Universe; like the old Spiderman movies, The Punisher, Howard The Duck, and others.
The movies can be watched in any order, but try to stick to the correct MCU timeline if you truly want to understand what’s going on by the end of it.
